As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. (EZEK. 47:3)

Let’s stay with the source and stream thought for a minute more today.

Do you remember that time Jesus stood up in the temple courts and cried out in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:37–38)?

That is a promise. See how that works? Jesus is the source and by the river-like movement of the Holy Spirit he dwells in us. That makes us both source and stream of living water.

Right here is where the logjams happen. So many of us are stuck at the point of the source, thinking we know God when, in reality, we only know about God. We have a lot of knowledge about Jesus, but when it comes down to it, we don’t really know him. And so often, those who know him have drifted off to sleep and stalled out somewhere along the way. It is why we are ever in need of deeper awakening.

Back to the logjam—how does our knowing catch up with our knowledge? That’s the great mystery, the secret long hidden—now revealed. Two words: Holy Spirit. Jesus, the Source, will never become the stream in and through us without our welcoming the fullness of the Holy Spirit into our lives. The Holy Spirit breaks the logjam within us, turning knowledge into knowing, quenching the eternal thirst of our souls, and making us move like a river from its source. That is a promise.

Is anyone thirsty?

It takes time. A thousand cubits can be a ways to go. We must be patient.

Ankle deep is good.

Come Holy Spirit and break the logjam of our knowledge about you in such a way that our knowing you can grow. Yes, translate our knowledge into knowing. We know that will require deeper humility on our part, to be honest with one another about where we are. Help us with that. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
